In 1951 Isamu Noguchi visited the town of Gifu, Ja In 1951 Isamu Noguchi visited the town of Gifu, Japan, known for its manufacture of lanterns and umbrellas from mulberry bark paper and bamboo. Noguchi designed the first of his lamps that would be produced by the traditional Gifu methods of construction. He called these works Akari, a term meaning light as illumination, but also implying the idea of weightlessness. The fabrication still follows the traditional methods for Japanese Gifu lanterns and each Akari lamp is handcrafted.
Here seen in some of its many variations at The Noguchi Museum in New York.

The unique lounge chair is deeply rooted in Danish modernism, and is a tribute to the 50's joy of color and love for teak. The Fried Egg Lounge Chair can be upholstered in a wide selection of beautiful colors, and it is possible to play with two-color combinations too, which in particular shows its references to a fried egg.
